Early life & education encyclopedia

Jeremy David Hanson was born on 18 February 1967, the son of a Royal Air Force officer who was posted to Canberra in 1979; he completed his schooling in Queensland. He joined the Australian Army in 1986 and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 1987, and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of New England and a master's degree in Management and Defence Studies from the University of Canberra. He pursued a military career before entering ACT politics.

Unlike other Australian schemes, it sets no time frame within which death must be expected. Hanson supports same-sex marriage. Hanson voted no on 27 August 2020 when the ACT Legislative Assembly agreed to the Sexuality and Gender Identity Conversion Practices Bill 2020 (12 to 9), and voted no on 21 March 2024 when the ACT Legislative Assembly agreed to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill 2023 (12 to 5), which gave greater choice of gender descriptors on birth certificates, removed the clinical-treatment requirement and lowered the application age.

Religious freedom official record

In the Discrimination Amendment Bill 2022 debate (23 March 2023), Hanson said the Canberra Liberals would support the bill, stated that people should be protected from discrimination on the basis of their faith as well as other attributes, noted faith groups remained 'nervous' about possible unintended consequences, and moved amendments (including on behalf of Elizabeth Lee) seeking a longer commencement period and an objects clause asserting that all human rights are held with equal importance. This reflects stated positions and recorded contributions to debate.

Hanson, as Deputy Liberal Leader, opposed drug decriminalisation, saying 'it's going to lead to more crime. It's going to lead to more carnage on our roads.' He later moved a 2025 Assembly motion to repeal the decriminalisation laws, calling them 'a failed experiment' that is 'not evidence-based' and arguing 'the only people that are winning are the drug dealers.'
