Immigration verified
As Immigration Minister, Giles issued Ministerial Direction 99 (2023), which tightened deportation criteria by weighting a non-citizen's community ties and time in Australia. After criticism, on 7 June 2024 he replaced it with Ministerial Direction 110, which he said makes 'community protection' and 'the safety of the Australian community' the highest priority in visa cancellation decisions; he stated he had cancelled 40 visas 'in the national interest' that week. As Shadow Minister he led Labor's campaign against privatising Australia's visa system and established a Multicultural Caucus Committee.
