Andrew William Hastie was born on 30 September 1982 in Wangaratta, Victoria, to a schoolteacher mother and a father who was a church pastor. After the family moved to Sydney's inner west, he attended Ashbury Public School and, from year 5, The Scots College, completing his HSC in 2000. He graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy (University of New South Wales) in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in history, politics and philosophy, having joined the UNSW Regiment as an officer cadet in 2001 and completed officer training at Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 2006. Immigration verified

Andrew Hastie has stated that Australia's immigration numbers are 'too high, while the standards are too low,' arguing population growth has outpaced infrastructure and pressured housing and services and that 'the system needs a massive overhaul' (March 2026). In October 2025 he resigned from the Liberal shadow frontbench, saying he could not remain Shadow Home Affairs Minister 'and remain silent on immigration policy.'

Hastie is a Christian; after rejecting religion in adolescence he later became part of several reformed and evangelical churches (including Capitol Hill Baptist Church, St Matthew's Anglican Church Shenton Park, Crossroads Church Canberra, and Mandurah Presbyterian Church), and has cited his Christian faith as informing his policy views such as on individual freedoms.

Andrew Hastie, Shadow Minister for Industry and Sovereign Capability, has argued for rebuilding Australian manufacturing as a matter of sovereignty, stating "Our need for a reborn Australian manufacturing sector is now vital. Our sovereignty depends upon it, our allies and partners depend upon it." He defined self-reliance as "the ability of Australia to domestically manufacture the goods and services we need," said "if globalisation led to the offshoring of Australian manufacturing, then the new geopolitical disorder can bring it back home," and called for governments to support and "pick winners" in industry.

Hastie is a prominent critic of Chinese government influence in Australia, having written that 'Communist China' rather than Islamic terrorism would be the central security concern of the 21st century, and supported banning Huawei from Australia's 5G network. In May 2020 he signed a letter condemning what it called an assault on Hong Kong's autonomy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
