Wilkie considers Australia's bipartisan policy of mandatory detention 'immoral and illegal under numerous international agreements.' His Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill 2022 would effectively abolish offshore detention and move asylum seekers and refugees into the community with access to housing, support and the right to work. He cites detention costs of about $360,000 per person per year versus about $4,429 for someone living in the community, and condemns Australia's offshore processing on Nauru and Manus.

On his "Where I stand" page, Wilkie states "Foreign investment needs much better regulation. Yes, Australia needs it, but only on our terms and only when it's genuinely in the national interest." He adds that "Assessment criteria must always include a national security test, and strategic assets including energy, transport infrastructure and broadacre prime agricultural land must never be sold or leased."
