Robert Bellarmine Carl Katter was born on 22 May 1945 in Cloncurry, Queensland; his paternal grandfather Carl Robert Katter was born in Bsharri and emigrated to Australia in 1898, and his father was politician Bob Katter Sr. He received his early education in Cloncurry, where he was one of only six students at his school to complete Year 12, and attended the University of Queensland to study law but left without graduating. Immigration verified

Bob Katter (KAP) called in February 2024 for Australia's migrant intake to be 'cut in half' and the student intake reduced by two-thirds, saying migration preference 'has to come from countries with democracy, egalitarian traditions, rule of law, Christian principles and industrial awards.' On asylum seekers he advocates turning back boats 'with, of course, fuel and food.' In January 2026 he reiterated a policy of 'No migration without assimilation.'

Katter holds protectionist and economic-nationalist views: he supports traditional Country Party statutory marketing for agriculture, opposes privatisation and economic deregulation, and has pioneered protests against imported produce (such as bananas) and championed mandating domestic ethanol fuel content. He resigned from the National Party in 2001 citing its abandonment of rural protectionist principles.
