Carina Mary Lindsay Garland was born in 1982 in Traralgon, Victoria, to a father who was a general practitioner and a mother who was a nurse; her maternal grandparents had immigrated to Australia from Italy in the 1950s, and she grew up in Clayton. She attended Sacré Cœur School in Glen Iris, then enrolled in an Arts/Law degree at Monash University, achieving first-class honours in English Literature, before receiving a scholarship to complete a PhD in the humanities at the University of Sydney.
