Immigration verified
As Minister for Home Affairs, in a National Press Club address on 27 April 2023 O'Neil described Australia's migration system as 'broken' after 'a decade of genuinely breathtaking neglect,' saying it 'is failing our businesses, it is failing migrants themselves. And most importantly, it is failing Australians.' She commissioned a review of the migration system and indicated her proposed reforms would likely produce 'a slightly smaller migration program over time.'
Economic nationalism verified
In her 2013 first speech, O'Neil said government "should not be building great tariff walls or controlling the big macroeconomic levers," arguing instead that government supports business competitiveness through a skilled population, world-class infrastructure, safe cities and a culture of invention. She referenced modern manufacturing (the Corning NBN-fibre factory) as "made possible by a clever and adaptable workforce."
