Daniel Thomas Tehan was born on 27 January 1968 in Melbourne, the third of six children, and grew up on his family's farming property near Mansfield, Victoria; his mother was a Victorian state MP and minister, and his father a Victorian Liberal Party country vice-president. He attended a Catholic primary school and a public high school in country Victoria before boarding at Xavier College, Melbourne, and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University, and a Master of International Relations from the University of Kent in England. Immigration verified

As Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Tehan has criticised Labor over migration levels, stating 'this Labor Government is pursuing Rudd's agenda by stealth' and 'Labor is delivering a big Australia without being upfront with the Australian people.' He has argued the government lacks a migration plan addressing impacts on rents, infrastructure and congestion, and raised concern about the whereabouts of tens of thousands of unsuccessful asylum-seeker applicants.
