Immigration verified
In his March 2024 Senate first speech, Sharma linked high immigration to housing pressure, saying 'the shortage of housing is being exacerbated by high immigration' and that 'until we are able to accelerate the pace of our home building, we need to reduce our immigration intake.'
Foreign policy & aid verified
Sharma, a former Australian ambassador to Israel, has advocated that Australia spend more than 2% of GDP on defence. On Israel-Gaza he has supported demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip and stated that the conflict will not end until Hamas stops firing rockets.
Freedom of speech verified
In additional comments to the Senate committee report on the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024 (25 November 2024) he opposed the bill on free-expression grounds, calling it dangerous, rushed and ill-advised, and argued its definitions were so broad that platforms facing penalties of up to five per cent of global turnover would over-remove lawful speech. He welcomed the recommendation to withdraw the bill and said no comparable bill should be introduced again.
