Deborah Mary O'Neill was born on 4 June 1961 in Parramatta and grew up in western Sydney, the eldest daughter of six children born to Irish immigrants, Jim and Mary O'Neill. She is a graduate of St Patrick's College, Campbelltown, and holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in education from the University of Sydney and the University of New England, as well as a Master of Arts from the Australian Catholic University. Before entering politics she taught high school and later worked as a lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle. [source]
