Edham Nurredin (Ed) Husic was born on 3 February 1970 in Sydney to Bosnian Muslim immigrant parents, Hasib and Hasiba, who had arrived in Australia in the late 1960s; his father worked as a welder on projects including the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Raised in Western Sydney, he was educated at Blacktown South Public School and Mitchell High School, and graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Communications. In his maiden speech, Husic, the first Muslim member of federal parliament, praised migrants and multiculturalism, stating 'multiculturalism represents a vast reservoir of energy this nation can tap into,' and that harnessing talent 'from the first owners to the recently arrived' builds 'one of the greatest countries on the planet.'

Husic was born to Bosnian Muslim immigrant parents and is the first Muslim elected to Australia's federal parliament; his household practised Islam while also celebrating Christmas and Easter, and after the September 11 attacks he described himself as a 'non-practising' Muslim. He took his ministerial oath on the Quran.

Ed Husic has advocated for rebuilding Australian domestic manufacturing and self-sufficiency, stating "Australia ranks last in a list of OECD countries in terms of manufacturing self-sufficiency" and "We want to send this signal to industry and its workers: Australian Labor is on the side of Australian manufacturing," describing manufacturing as "in the DNA of the Australian Labor Party."

Husic supports recognition of a Palestinian state and, after being dropped from cabinet, said on 12 May 2025 the government should do whatever it could to back Palestinian statehood as quickly as possible; he described mass starvation in Gaza as a conscious decision and the use of starvation as a war crime, and in May 2025 called for targeted sanctions against Israeli government ministers overseeing the military campaign in Gaza.
