Garth Russell Hamilton was born on 5 March 1979 and grew up in Ipswich, Queensland; his father was a concreter and his mother worked as a Hansard reporter in the Australian Parliament. He attended Ipswich Grammar School and studied engineering at the University of Queensland. Before entering politics he worked as an engineer on large infrastructure projects around the world. Hamilton publicly rebuked One Nation's Pauline Hanson over her call for a "monocultural" Australia, saying her "appeal to a monoculture had more in common with sharia law or North Korea than it did with western liberal democracies." He defended Australian multiculturalism against One Nation's calls to end multiculturalism and cut migration.
