Glenn Sterle was born on 3 January 1960 in Melbourne; his father was born in Yugoslavia and arrived in Australia as a refugee after World War II, while his mother was born in the United Kingdom. He grew up in the Perth suburb of Langford and attended Thornlie Senior High School, dropping out at 17 to work as a furniture removalist before founding a road-train transport business three years later. He was a trade union organiser before becoming a Labor senator for Western Australia in 2005. [source]

Foreign policy & aid verified

In October 2014 Sterle used a Senate speech to condemn fellow Labor MP Melissa Parke's support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, calling on her to "cease her support for divisive campaigns like the BDS movement and support a more constructive dialogue," characterising her stance as "simplistic" and "inflammatory," and reaffirming Labor policy supporting a two-state solution and lasting peace for Israel and Palestine.

Voted against the second reading of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill 2017, which proposed replacing 'offend, insult, humiliate' with 'harass' in section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (Senate, 30 March 2017; Ayes 32, Noes 29). Voted against Schedule 1 of that bill standing as printed, the provision making the substitution; the Schedule was negatived and the change did not proceed (Senate, in committee, 30-31 March 2017; Ayes 28, Noes 31).
