Jordon Alexander Steele-John was born on 14 October 1994 in Northampton, England, and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth; he immigrated to Australia as a child with his parents and grandparents. He and his brother were home-educated, and he later studied politics and history by correspondence at Macquarie University, though his studies were cut short by his appointment to the Senate in 2017 as an Australian Greens senator for Western Australia. In his maiden Senate speech, Steele-John called for a more humanitarian approach to refugees and asylum seekers, describing the situation on Manus Island as an "ongoing humanitarian crisis" and arguing Australia is "a nation built by those who come across the sea seeking a better life."

Foreign policy & aid verified

Steele-John, the Greens' spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Peace & Nuclear Disarmament, has campaigned to have the government revoke the AUKUS pact and redirect funds to community services. In a November 2021 piece he called to "tear up the AUKUS deal," ratify the nuclear weapons ban treaty, ban the development and sale of weapons including autonomous weapons, close joint military facilities including Pine Gap, oppose framing China as an inevitable enemy, and pursue cooperation and diplomacy.
