Katherine Ella Chaney was born on 21 January 1975 in the United States; her father is businessman Michael Chaney, and her grandfather was Fred Chaney Sr., a Liberal Party MP and Menzies government minister. She attended John XXIII College and the University of Western Australia, earning a law degree, and joined law firm Blake Dawson Waldron in Sydney in 1998, later finishing an MBA in 2003.

Immigration own statement

Speaking on 26 March 2024 as the Migration Amendment (Removal and Other Measures) Bill 2024 was forced through the House, Kate Chaney said it was 'very very disappointing,' stating her community 'wants to see compassion when we are approaching asylum seekers.' She has also criticised the former 'fast track' processing system as flawed.
