In her maiden speech (July 2019), Thwaites supported a 'humane approach to asylum seekers,' adding 'I believe this can be achieved while maintaining our sovereignty and our borders.' She has criticised the holding of asylum seekers in hotels as 'unsafe and cruel conditions,' said 'unnecessary cruelty is a hallmark of this government when it comes to treatment of asylum seekers,' and criticised refusal to take up New Zealand's resettlement offers.

In a February 2024 parliamentary speech, Thwaites said she shared "the horror... at the destruction and death that have been occurring in Gaza under Israel's military action" and expressed devastation at Israel's planned Rafah ground offensive. She noted "Australia has voted for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire," said any ceasefire "cannot be a one-sided ceasefire" and "will also require Hamas to cease its attacks and to release the Israeli hostages," and said Australia expects Israel to act in accordance with the ICJ ruling.
