Lisa Marie Chesters was born on 11 February 1980 in Wentworthville, New South Wales; her parents owned a small business, and her mother later completed a PhD as a mature-age student and became an academic. Chesters holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Politics from the University of Queensland, where she was involved in student politics, serving as secretary of the University of Queensland Union in 2002 and as women's officer of the National Union of Students in 2003. She subsequently worked as an organiser for United Voice from 2003 to 2013 before entering parliament. [source]

In her 2013 first speech, Chesters highlighted Bendigo manufacturers (Australian Turntables, Industrial Conveying Australia, Keech Casting and Hofmann Engineering) as "world leaders in their fields exporting to countries all over the world," and said it was "ideologically driven policies of governments" rather than red tape that created roadblocks hindering their growth, criticising policies she said blocked Hofmann from expanding into wind energy generation.
