In his Lowy Institute paper 'Deterring at a distance: The strategic logic of AUKUS' (24 June 2024), Gosling argued that 'China's military build-up is the largest and most ambitious of any country since the end of the Second World War', that nuclear-powered submarines 'are optimal deterrence machines' and a 'goldilocks long-distance capability', and defended AUKUS as giving Australia 'added strategic weight to deter a more powerful adversary'.
