Madeleine Mary Harvie King was born on 31 March 1973 in Calista, Western Australia, the youngest of five children; her father John Morris immigrated to Western Australia in 1956 after Royal Navy service and worked at the BP Kwinana oil refinery, while her mother ran a drapery store in Rockingham. She grew up in Shoalwater, attending Safety Bay Primary School, Rockingham Beach Primary School and Safety Bay Senior High School, began an arts degree at the University of Western Australia, moved to Melbourne to study aerospace engineering at RMIT, then returned to Perth and completed a Bachelor of Laws at UWA.
