Marielle Catherine (Feuerherdt) Smith was born on 30 December 1986 in Sydney; her mother was born in the United Kingdom, and Smith held British citizenship by descent until renouncing it in 2018 prior to running for parliament. She attended University Senior College in Adelaide, and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University and a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. [source]

In her first (maiden) speech to the Senate, Smith referred to "my Christian values of social justice and fairness," saying she found a political home in the Labor Party because of those values.
