Mehreen Saeed Faruqi was born on 8 July 1963 in Lahore, Pakistan, and was raised on the campus of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), where her father was a civil engineering professor. She graduated from UET Lahore with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 1988, then migrated to Australia in 1992, settling in Sydney, where she earned a Master of Engineering Science from UNSW in 1994 and a Doctorate in Environmental Engineering in 2000. She worked as an engineer before becoming a Senator for New South Wales for the Australian Greens in 2018. [source]

Immigration verified

As the Australian Greens' immigration and citizenship spokesperson, Faruqi advocates for refugees and asylum seekers and seeks an end to mandatory detention. In September 2025 she moved in the Senate to condemn anti-immigration marches as 'racist, white supremacist rallies' and accused politicians and media of normalising hate.

Faruqi has been a prominent parliamentary critic of Israel over the Gaza war. In November 2023 she led Greens colleagues in a Senate walkout protesting the government's refusal to call for a ceasefire, and in 2025 she held signs in the Senate reading "Gaza is starving... Sanction Israel" and directly asked PM Albanese, "will you sanction Israel?" She has called for an end to Australian military exports to Israel.
