Freelander identifies as Jewish, describing himself as 'not a particularly religious Jew, but I still describe myself as Jewish'; he comes from one of the oldest Jewish families in Australia and had his bar mitzvah at Temple Emanuel, Woollahra.

Foreign policy & aid own statement

In a parliamentary statement (16 October 2023) Freelander affirmed 'Israel has a right to exist ... and Israel has the right to protect itself' and condemned Hamas, saying it had 'opened the gates of hell'. He also grieved for civilian casualties on all sides, stating 'in this conflict the Palestinians will be victims just as much as the Israelis', and expressed hope for the safe release of hostages and a resolution with minimal further loss of life.
