In his first speech to Parliament (12 October 2016), Dick described Labor as "proudly the party of multiculturalism" and said "multiculturalism is not just a great social strength of our nation but increasingly a great economic strength." Referencing migrants and refugees, he said they "proudly call Australia home and are entitled to feel welcome—not targeted or demonised" and pledged he "will never judge anyone by their race or religion."
