Michael John Daley was born on 1 November 1965 in Sydney and raised in South Maroubra as one of four children in a middle-class family, attending St Mary, St Joseph Primary School and then Marcellin College, Randwick, finishing in 1983. He spent 13 years as a customs officer with the Australian Customs Service while studying law at night, was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales as a legal practitioner in 1998, worked a year at a Sydney law firm, and then spent five years as a senior in-house lawyer with NRMA Motoring and Services before entering parliament. Abortion & reproductive policy verified

As a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly, voted in favour of the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019 (which became the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019, decriminalising abortion in NSW) at both the second reading (8 Aug 2019) and the third reading (final passage, 8 Aug 2019), on a conscience vote.

Voluntary assisted dying verified

Michael Daley voted in favour of (Ayes) the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 at its third reading in the Legislative Assembly on 26 November 2021 (Assembly third reading, which passed 52 votes to 32). The Act was a conscience vote and became the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022 (NSW).

Religious freedom verified

As Attorney General, Daley introduced and championed the Conversion Practices Ban Bill 2024 (passed 22 March 2024). He said conversion practices 'cause significant ongoing trauma' and that the law was developed 'following extensive consultation to ensure that it strikes the right balance between protecting vulnerable communities as well as legitimate religious and cultural practices,' adding the government did 'not intend to ban the teachings of a religious leader or expression of a religious belief through sermon.' He later reaffirmed in parliament that 'praying with or over a particular person in an attempt to try to change or suppress that person's sexuality or gender is unlawful.'

Drugs & law and order verified

Labor Attorney-General. He announced the 2024 youth bail law changes and the new "post and boast" (performance crime) offence (passed 22 March 2024), saying the bail laws were "purposefully designed to address repeated alleged offending by young people aged between 14 and 18" and that posting footage advertising crimes "is unacceptable and has to stop." He supported the expansion of pre-court drug diversion (Early Drug Diversion Initiative), calling it "key to alleviating pressure on our court system," and led the Government's October 2025 response to the 2024 Drug Summit which supported over 50 of 56 recommendations including a pill-testing trial and reformed drug diversion.
