Tamara Francine Smith is one of four children of an American corporate manager father and an Australian mother who worked as a secretary; following her parents' separation the family home burned down and her mother suffered a disabling stroke. She grew up in Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains and in Manly, Sydney, before moving to Byron Bay at age 15, and her ancestors have lived in the Northern Rivers area for four generations. She earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of NSW, a Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from Southern Cross University, and worked as a secondary school teacher in Ballina, Brisbane's western suburbs and Broken Hill before being admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 2010. Abortion & reproductive policy verified

As a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly, voted in favour of the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019 (which became the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019, decriminalising abortion in NSW) at both the second reading (8 Aug 2019) and the third reading (final passage, 8 Aug 2019), on a conscience vote.

Voluntary assisted dying verified

Tamara Smith voted in favour of (Ayes) the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 at its third reading in the Legislative Assembly on 26 November 2021 (Assembly third reading, which passed 52 votes to 32). The Act was a conscience vote and became the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022 (NSW).

Gender & LGBTQ+ policy verified
