Immigration verified
As Greens immigration spokesperson, McKim is a strong opponent of offshore detention, describing it as designed "to make people's lives so miserable... that they decide to turn back to face the persecution they fled." He has called Australia a "human rights pariah," said there is "never an excuse for torture," criticised Labor's policy as "the same rubbish in a different bin," and called for detainees to be evacuated and a "genuine regional approach" to be adopted.

In a Senate speech on 26 March 2025, McKim described Israel's actions in Gaza as "a genocide" and "a barbaric murder spree," said it was "utterly disgraceful how complicit Labor has allowed us to become," referencing weapons components and the Pine Gap facility, and moved a motion calling for the government to impose sanctions on "the extremist Netanyahu government," end the arms trade, and call for an end to the conflict in Gaza.
Citizenship (s44 eligibility) verified
McKim was born in London and held British citizenship, which he formally renounced (registered 1 February 2016); he sat in breach of section 44 from 20 August 2015 until that date, but his renunciation was complete before the 2016 election nominations, so he was not in breach when nominating.

Voted against the second reading of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill 2017, which proposed replacing 'offend, insult, humiliate' with 'harass' in section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (Senate, 30 March 2017; Ayes 32, Noes 29). Voted against Schedule 1 of that bill standing as printed, the provision making the substitution; the Schedule was negatived and the change did not proceed (Senate, in committee, 30-31 March 2017; Ayes 28, Noes 31).
