John-Paul Langbroek was born on 31 January 1961 in Assen, the Netherlands, and moved to Brisbane as a one-year-old in 1962; his father was Dutch and his mother American with Jamaican ancestry, and he and his sister, media personality Kate Langbroek, grew up as the only two children of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a graduate of Sunnybank State High School and went on to study at the University of Queensland, completing an honours degree in dental science in 1983. [source]
