Michael Craig Berkman was born on 13 March 1981 in Brisbane; his father worked in media and his mother had trained as a secondary school teacher, and the family moved to Toowoomba when he was three. He attended Wilsonton State School and Toowoomba State High School, then began a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland before moving to Griffith University's Nathan campus, graduating in 2009 with a double degree, Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws.
