Immigration verified
A former refugee-justice and Amnesty International campaigner and former Greens immigration spokesperson, Hanson-Young has been a prominent advocate against offshore detention. On leaving the immigration portfolio she said she would "never stop fighting for people seeking asylum" and that her team's work "has exposed the systematic abuse of women and children on Nauru and has been central to changing public perception about offshore detention."
Freedom of speech verified
Voted against the second reading of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill 2017, which proposed replacing 'offend, insult, humiliate' with 'harass' in section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (Senate, 30 March 2017; Ayes 32, Noes 29). Voted against Schedule 1 of that bill standing as printed, the provision making the substitution; the Schedule was negatived and the change did not proceed (Senate, in committee, 30-31 March 2017; Ayes 28, Noes 31). In the Australian Greens' dissenting report on the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024 (25 November 2024) she argued that misinformation is a real and growing danger and platforms must be reined in, but that this bill did not reach the problem: the exemptions were concerning, the definitions broad and ambiguous, and the co-regulatory design would have left platforms judging truth. She objected specifically to the carve-out for mainstream media, and called instead for an approach targeting algorithms and a legislated digital duty of care.
