Scott Andrew Buchholz was born on 27 March 1968 in Rockhampton, Queensland; his father died when he was eight, and he and his three siblings were subsequently raised by their mother on a widow's pension. He attended St Brendan's College, Yeppoon. He worked as a ringer on a station at Kilcummin from 1985 to 1987, then in the agri-finance industry after moving to Emerald, before establishing his own freight and courier business. [source]

In his maiden speech, Buchholz said he would fight to get farmers a better price at the farm gate and emphasised agricultural self-reliance, warning that 'without these people we become captive to overseas producers and overseas markets; without these people we lose our dignity and our sovereignty.'
