Hilton Jonas Gumbys was born in Darwin and grew up in the Adelaide suburb of Dernancourt, attending Dernancourt Primary School in 1975. He is a first-generation Australian; his father, Jonas Petras Gumbys, was a refugee from Lithuania who migrated in the late 1940s. Before politics he trained as a machinist and fitter and was active as a trade unionist with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. [source]
