Sue Lines was born in Perth on 15 December 1953, the daughter of Nancy McRae and Jim Lines; her father was born in England and came to Australia at age 12 as part of a child migration scheme, initially living at Fairbridge Farm. She attended Gosnells Primary School and Armadale Senior High School, then obtained a Bachelor of Education from Murdoch University. She worked as a teacher and community organiser, joining the Labor Party in 1983 while studying, and later worked at United Voice as an organiser and national assistant secretary before entering the Senate. Senate President Sue Lines has publicly identified as an atheist, stating in 2022 regarding the Lord's Prayer: "Personally, I would like to see the prayers gone. I'm an atheist. I don't want to say the prayers."
