Zappia has stated in Parliament that he acknowledges the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, including the need to recognise a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, and the need to address the root causes of the conflict including dismantling Israel's 'system of apartheid against all Palestinians.' In an October 2023 speech he said 'the killing of innocent Palestinians in Gaza must also stop' and that 'Israel must show restraint and respect for international law,' and he has called for a permanent two-state resolution.
Citizenship (s44 eligibility) verified
Zappia was born in Italy in 1952 and naturalised as an Australian citizen in 1958. He stated he ceased to be an Italian citizen automatically upon acquiring Australian citizenship in 1958 (Italy then stripping citizenship from those naturalising elsewhere), a position he said the Italian Consul confirmed by letter dated July 2004, supporting his section 44(i) eligibility.
