Abortion & reproductive policy verified
Purcell (Animal Justice Party) is a vocal advocate for expanded abortion access. In a June 2022 Guardian opinion piece she argued nurses should be permitted to prescribe medical abortions, and in Parliament has spoken in favour of expanding abortion services in rural and regional Victoria, drawing on her own experience of difficulties accessing services and harassment before safe access zones. In October 2025 she co-authored, with Rachel Payne, a report calling for free medical and surgical abortion for all Victorians, expanded public-hospital provision, and extending medical abortion access from nine to twelve weeks.
Freedom of speech verified
Voted for the Justice Legislation Amendment (Anti-vilification and Social Cohesion) Bill 2024, which repealed the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 and expanded vilification protections (Legislative Council, second reading, 1 April 2025; Ayes 22, Noes 17). Animal Justice Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council Select Committee on Recreational Native Bird Hunting Arrangements (2023) and a leading campaigner against duck shooting. Animal welfare verified
Animal Justice Party MLC who moved a motion in the Victorian Legislative Council (passed 23–14 on 16 October 2024) requiring Greyhound Racing Victoria to record and publish more detailed animal-welfare integrity data, including track and training-paddock injuries. She told the chamber that if she had the decision-making power she would end greyhound racing entirely, and warned the industry needed welfare measures 'to maintain their social licence.' The Greens and Labor supported the motion; the Liberals and Nationals opposed it. Purcell strongly supports ending greyhound racing.
