Matthew Jason Guy was born on 6 March 1974 in Greensborough, Victoria. He is of Ukrainian descent on his maternal side; his mother was born in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine and arrived in Australia in 1949 with her parents as displaced persons. He attended Montmorency Secondary College, where he joined the Young Liberals at age 16, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in politics and history from La Trobe University plus postgraduate studies in Ukrainian language and culture at Monash University. Liberal MP for Bulleen and a former Victorian Liberal leader (Opposition Leader 2014-2018 and 2021-2022). In October 2021, as Opposition Leader, he confirmed the Liberals would not reverse the conversion-practices ban: 'The Liberals will never bring back conversion therapy. Read that again.'
