Voted YES (Ayes) on the third reading of the Abortion Legislation Reform Bill 2023 in the WA Legislative Council on 20 September 2023, supporting the bill's passage. The bill decriminalised abortion (removing it from the Criminal Code), removed mandatory counselling and the doctor-referral requirement, and raised the gestational limit for additional restrictions from 20 to 23 weeks. The third reading passed 25 Ayes to 6 Noes.

WA Greens parliamentary leader and the party's LGBTQIA+ spokesperson. Pettitt has been a vocal advocate for banning conversion practices, reforming the Equal Opportunity Act, and gender recognition reform via a self-identification (statutory declaration) model. On the 2024 Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment (Sex or Gender Changes) Bill (which abolished the Gender Reassignment Board), he supported abolishing the board but opposed the bill as written, saying the government's handling was "undemocratic" and that the bill "continues to medicalise trans, intersex and gender-diverse identities," while calling the Gender Reassignment Board "a cruel, unnecessary, and humiliating barrier." He has criticised WA Labor's failure to deliver on promises to reform the Equal Opportunity Act, ban conversion practices and scrap the gender reassignment board, and stated the Greens have long pushed the government to reform the Act.

He criticised the Cook Labor Government for climate inaction: 'Last term, the Cook Labor government promised climate action - they even spent millions of taxpayer dollars talking up their plan - but ultimately failed to deliver.'
