Rita Saffioti was born on 26 May 1972 in Perth, Western Australia, to Nicodemo Saffioti, an orchardist, and Giuseppina Ienco, a cook's assistant, both post-war immigrants from the Italian region of Calabria. She grew up on an orchard in Roleystone in the Perth Hills, attending Roleystone Primary School, Roleystone District High School, and Kelmscott Senior High School, where she was dux. She graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree with distinction from Curtin University, majoring in economics, then worked for the Department of Finance and Department of Treasury before becoming an economics adviser to Geoff Gallop from 1997. Voluntary assisted dying verified

Rita Saffioti voted FOR the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2019 in the WA Legislative Assembly. On the conscience (free) vote, the member is recorded in the Ayes at the bill's second reading on 3 September 2019 (passed 44-12) and at the third reading on 24 September 2019 (passed 45-11).

Transport & infrastructure verified

As WA Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Transport, Saffioti is the political owner and champion of METRONET, WA's largest-ever public transport investment (~72km of new rail and 23 new stations). She has repeatedly promoted its delivery, e.g. on a Sept 2024 milestone calling it 'testament to the enormous amount of planning and preparation that has gone into delivering this project', and on 14 Nov 2025 announcing the final Midland Station as 'the final piece of the METRONET puzzle'.
