Tony Buti was born on 20 August 1961 in Collie and moved to Armadale at age nine; his mother was born in Roelands and raised in Yarloop, and his father emigrated from Italy as a 21-year-old in the early 1950s. He attended St Brigid's Convent and Kingsley Primary School in Armadale and graduated from Kelmscott Senior High School in 1978. He went on to study at the University of Western Australia and the Australian National University, obtaining an LL.B in 1992, and later completed a PhD on guardianship law and the Stolen Generations at Wolfson College, Oxford University, in 2003. Voluntary assisted dying verified

Tony Buti voted FOR the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2019 in the WA Legislative Assembly. On the conscience (free) vote, the member is recorded in the Ayes at the bill's second reading on 3 September 2019 (passed 44-12) and at the third reading on 24 September 2019 (passed 45-11).

Gender & LGBTQ+ policy verified

Labor MLA (Armadale) and Attorney General. Buti is leading the Cook Labor Government's commitment to ban LGBTIQA+ conversion practices. He stated: "Conversion practices that are used to attempt to suppress or change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity are not therapeutic and they cause mental health harm to LGBTIQA+ people" and "The Cook Labor Government is committed to banning LGBTIQA+ conversion practices." He said legislation to criminalise conversion therapy, with a complementary civil response scheme for survivors, would be introduced to parliament in 2026, with continued stakeholder engagement on drafting.

Religious freedom verified

As WA Attorney General following the March 2025 election, Buti announced that a ban on conversion practices would be introduced to Parliament by the end of 2025, with a model including 'criminal prohibition and a civil response scheme.' Critics noted the proposed religious protection covers only 'a mere expression of belief or religious principle which is not intended to change or suppress an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity.' The Cook Government, in which Buti serves, has committed to reforming and narrowing the religious exemptions under the Equal Opportunity Act and to strengthening protections for LGBTIQA+ staff and students in religious schools. His office's response to Groenewald's June 2026 question on Christian freedom of expression committed to legislation that 'achieves a balance between the rights and interests of the diverse community.'
