Voluntary assisted dying verified

Voted on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 in the Victorian Legislative Council (conscience vote; the bill passed the Council 22-18 on 22 November 2017). Harriet Shing voted YES (in favour).

Gender & LGBTQ+ policy verified

Labor MLC for Eastern Victoria (since 2014) and the first openly lesbian member of the Parliament of Victoria. In June 2022 she was appointed Minister for Equality (alongside Steve Dimopoulos, becoming one of Victoria's first openly gay cabinet ministers). She was a vocal supporter of the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill, speaking in the February 2021 debate to acknowledge survivors and the harms of conversion practices, and has publicly criticised the Liberal Party's record on LGBTQI protections. She is a member of the Labor Left. As Minister for Equality she spoke against Moira Deeming's October 2023 motion for an inquiry into gender-affirming care (defeated 21-16).
